Our vision for students who are gifted is that they feel valued in a learning environment which both challenges and supports them to pursue excellence and develop a passion for lifelong learning.
(Framework for Gifted Education, EQ, 2004)
At Kurwongbah State School our Whole School Thinking Skills Program is used as an integral part of our Curriculum delivery for all students, within and across all KLAs and year levels. In addition, our Gifted and Talented Education Action Plan has been developed to acknowledge, support and provide for those students who have been identified as Gifted and Talented within an inclusive model.
Support Teacher- Gifted and Talented (Rebecca Rowley, 2006-2007) works one day a week to coordinate and facilitate the GATE Action Plan. This role involves Rebecca working directly with identified students (and their teacher/s, within the current classroom program) and providing support and relevant resources for classroom teachers.
Our GATE Action Plan has been developed from Education Queensland's Framework for Gifted Education (227K, PDF File). This Framework for state schools consists of The Policy for the Education of Students who are Gifted and Guidelines for Acceleration within the Compulsory Years of Schooling.
Included on this page are a number of useful documents and resources that have been developed or adapted to support the implementation of our GATE Action Plan. This range of resources can be used by teachers to support curriculum programs in order to identify, monitor and cater for gifted students within their classrooms. Some of these resources may even be useful for parents of gifted students.
Kurwongbah State School invites teachers to freely access this webpage and would welcome any suggestions and activities that would enhance this resource.

The purpose of the Action Plan is to maximise the educational outcomes for gifted students. Included in this Action Plan are the following resources:
Identification and Support Process for Gifted Students
At Kurwongbah, identification of gifted students is an ongoing process. This Identification and Support Process for Gifted Students is generally initiated by the classroom teachers. It outlines the steps involved in identifying gifted students at Kurwongbah as well as providing a guide to determining the appropriate level of support that may be required. This process is facilitated and monitored by the Support Teacher- Gifted and Talented in conjunction with the Special Needs Committee.
To further support the identification process Education Queensland recommends the use of The Sayler Questionnaires (for teachers and parents) developed by Michael Sayler (Harrison, C. 1999, Appendix B, Giftedness in Early Childhood, Inscript Publishing, Sydney)

Referral Form for Classroom Teachers
This form (28KB, MS Word) is used by classroom teachers to record specific details about personal and academic aspects of an individual student who has been referred for the above process. Once completed, the form is returned to the Support Teacher- Gifted and Talented who compiles the information on a Student Profile Form within the GATE Student File.
The Class Overview sheet (69 KB, MS Word) is a handy tool that teachers can use to determine which students require support within a range of KLA’s. This can be used each term to contribute to ongoing identification of gifted students. The Class Overview sheet developed by Felicity Bezer (LDC G&T- Nambour State School )is available to download and print.
GATE Student File Proformas
The following proformas are used in developing a GATE Student File. The GATE Student File is used to store data relating to the student. The documents below are available to download and print to assist teachers in developing their own GATE Student File for individual students.

Record of Action Sheet
The Record of Action Sheet (31KB, MS Word) is used by teachers to record all action taken throughout the process of identifying and supporting gifted students. It enables teachers to keep a track of relevant meetings and follow up required for individual students.
